CROSBY 38 EXPRESS CRUISER
Timeless. Spacious. Meticulously Hand Made.
Best Professionally Built Power Boat” at the 2011 WoodenBoat Show’s “Concours d’Elegance”, Mystic Seaport.
The family wanted a good-looking, sea-friendly, fast express cruiser for day and weekend journeys on Nantucket Sound, in wood, of course. For some boatbuilders that might seem like a tall order, but Ned Crosby had just the right model. Ned’s Grandfather, Chet Crosby, had built a 32-foot cruiser, designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, in the late 70’s and she was a beauty. Ned’s customer agreed that this was the design, but he wanted to make a few changes. A call was made to C. Raymond Hunt Associates and new plans were developed. This altered boat is just as pretty as the 70’s model, but a little bigger, at 38 feet, and a little faster, too. Ned christened this design the Crosby 38, and built hull #1 for his customer, who named her Avery M.
The owner of the Avery M. enjoyed the opportunity to explore his options with Ned. He worked with the shop on most aspects of the build: Brion Rieff in Brooklin, Maine planked the hull with Spanish cedar veneer cold-molded with epoxy resin then fiberglassed and epoxied again for strength. Once the hull was delivered to Ned’s shop, his crew worked hard to tailor the hull to the owner’s desires. They added a forward v-berth and an upper and lower berth. Across from these berths is the head, which is fitted with a stall shower, perhaps the one luxury in what is otherwise a very simple yacht. A small galley with an Inox drawer refrigerator was included on the bridge deck.
When the Avery M. slipped into the water on launching day, she displayed her sleek sport-fisher-style line, a clipper bow and a beautiful interior varnished to a high gloss. Her trial run showed her “true colors” when she hit a top speed of 38 knots at 5,000 rpm with her Twin 420 HP 8.1 Liter Volvo Penta.
Every inch of the Crosby 38 is “handmade.” There is no mold, which means each customer can choose his or her own layout; you provide Ned Crosby with your preferences regarding power, speed, number of berths, galley location, woodwork and he will deliver. You can even shorten or lengthen your boat by a few feet – E.M. Crosby Boatworks will engineer the perfect boat for you.
How nice is the Crosby 38? An editor at Yachting magazine was provided the opportunity to take Avery M.’s helm one day and he noted “She rode as smoothly as anyone could wish and felt solid, planted, as though she’d been carved from a single block of wood.” You can’t expect anything less from a Crosby-built boat.
