Ned and Mark work on “Gypsy”… She has had her brightwork stripped, the bungs and the fasteners all removed so that the brightwork could carefully be removed from the deck including the coaming. This included the deck canvas as well as all the hardware. The deck was then repaired, sealed and traditional deck canvas was installed through stretching and stapling. We are now in the process of repairing, reinstalling and refinishing the original wood work.
“Gypsy” was a gift to the Osterville Historical Society Museum by Frank and Marjorie O’Brien–a brother and sister. The boat was a college graduation present to Marjorie from her father in the 1940s. She is a modified cat boat, and is on the National Register as a beautiful B.B. Crowninshield designed turn-of-the-Century wooden boat. It was the “golden age” of the American yacht. She sailed in the waters around Osterville, and came in second place in the August 16, 1902 open race at the Wianno Yacht Club (located at the end of Sea View and Wianno Avenues, at the time. She was originally known as, “Witch.”
